Stream Study - Trip Blog

So, on Wednesday the 17th, our class and the other ATP class went on an amazing trip! We went to Bonnie Brae to explore BMI's and the stream.

Once we got to our location, we started right away (since we were a bit late). We got into groups and headed down to the stream. My group was Kira, Jasjit, Navita, Urvi, Simar and me. Navita and Kira went into the stream first. Once they had collected the sample they had to put it through the sift (that way you could see if there were any BMI's). I had to clean the sift with water. The water was FREEZING cold, which did not make anything easier. On top of THAT, it started to HAIL. So now I was freezing cold with ice pouring onto of my head.

Anyways after that, we did some chemistry. Thankfully it stopped hailing so at least now there wasn't ice hitting my head. We had to figure out the turbidity, pH, temperature and the oxygen in the water. The results were pretty fair. The pH was an eight, the turbidity was 40 JSU, the oxygen level (of the water) was a 4 ppm and the temperature was 9.4.
Oxygen level - 4 ppm
Turbidity - 40 JSU
pH - 8

Sorting out the BMI's
Once our stream study was done, we went to different bins to sort out the different BMI’s and our group found a LOT of red worms. Later on, we figured out that these RED WORMS were called midges. We also found some beetles, sow bugs and some small clams. When Simar got up to stretch her legs there was a worm under her. I picked the worm up with my hands but everyone in my group started to scream and scared me so I threw the worm because everyone scared ME when they screamed.

Then, we finally got to eat! I was starving from all that work. I washed my hands from the water in my water bottle and it was so HOT! My hands felt so amazing when I poured it on my hands. While we were eating, we got to know what we were going to do next and how many BMI’s we caught, we caught 109 BMI's which was a LOT.

Planting trees
The last activity we did was TREE PLANTING! We got a quick lesson on how to plant the tree. It looked so easy but once we started digging it was hard to make sure the bottom of the hole was flat and not too deep. But, sooner or later we finished planting our first tree and went on the plant two more. A the end my shoes were FULL of dirt and so were my hands.

All and all, it was an amazing trip. I loved sorting out the BMI’s and learning how many we caught. Planting the trees was an amazing experience as well. The only thing I did not like was the weather. It was very cold and it also started hailing making it even more hard to work. But in the end I learned a LOT of new things and had some good laughs.

Dog Man: Lord of the Fleas - Book Review

We'll get to the root of Petey's problems. Why he's the villain, in every Dog Man book. Well, this time it's different. Petey's the good guy. We'll also meet his childhood friends, who want their revenge with a giant Robo-Brontosaurus. And Petey will fight back with the power of knock-knock jokes, in Flip-O-Rama. Will the power of good arise or will Petey stay his rotten old self?  This book is very funny. Something I always enjoy about Dog Man books is Lil Petey (he's my favourite character). He always does this thing where he says "why" after everything. Here's an example from the book.  Lil Petey is never mad or angry. He is always happy and innocent. He makes many jokes that are always HILARIOUS!   I also really love Flip-O-Rama scenes,  Dav Pilkey always has Flip-O-Rama's in his books. Flip-O-Rama is when you flip a page very quickly and it looks like it is animated. I think that anyone, any age would laugh and learn some...

Watch The Sky - Book Review

Before Jory's stepfather Caleb came along they used to live in the city, just Jory and his mom. His mom worked in a crummy coffee shop. She had met Caleb there when he defended her. They moved to an old farmhouse. They had found Jory's little sister in the fields eating pumpkins. Ansel, Jory's little brother, was born there.  Jory Birch has no ordinary life. He has a life full of secrets, danger, silent sister and signs.  Now he had to go to school too. Jory had always been home schooled by his mother.  Kit was a secret. So were the signs. School was school and home was home. Jory couldn't let them mix. Friends were school and family was home.  Signs were anywhere and everywhere, Caleb - Jory's stepfather says. Signs. They could be anywhere. They could be anything. They mean everything. Red leaves in the springtime. Pages torn from a library book. All the fishes in an aquarium facing the same way. A cracked egg with twin yolks. All signs.  Caleb tol...

A penny worth a fortune.

A very special penny that's worth a lot.  Rare 1943 copper penny Ordinarily, a penny would be worth, well a cent. But this particular penny was sold for $204, 000! What makes this penny so unique? It's the year. That year the coins were supposed to be made of steel so they could use the copper for other items such as shell casings. These items were critical to the Military in World War II.  There is an estimated 10 to 15 of these 1943 copper pennies still in circulation. How were they made? Well, some copper got into the mints and out came these pennies. In 1943 they weren't really too relevant, but now it's worth more than $200, 000! 1943 steel penny 1943 copper penny This $204, 000 penny was once lunch money in 1947 and belonged to a man named Don Lutes. Don held on to the penny because something told him it was special. He soon found out that there was something special about it. In 1958 a 1943 penny was sold for $40, 000, which today is $300, ...
