Art To 2018 - My Review

A piece of art that challenged you to think about an issue
The woman who is pouring water onto the girls face looks indigenous or aboriginal to me. I think that the police or SWAT team harmed the woman laying on the ground. I think that these women are protesters, they might be protesting for land or water.
Kent Monkman 'Washing Mary's Tears'
A piece of art that reflected someone’s identity
I think that the photographer has a passion for basketball. The piece is called ‘One of The Boys’. I think that this photographer stands up for women's rights or is a feminist. I honestly love this photograph. It shows someone in a dress and holding a basketball. I feel like it has a deeper meaning than just a really nice dress. It shows that girls can do things that are usually defined as “boy” things.
Esmaa Mohamoud 'One of The Boys'

A piece of art from an Indigenous artist and why that piece might be important
A wolf means strength, courage and loyalty to many indigenous tribes. A bird represents magic in many indigenous tribes. Some sort of bird is always at the top of all totem poles. That is because birds are the rulers of the sky.
Kenojuak Ashevak 'GREY WOLF AND BIRDS'
A piece of art you found ‘shocking’ and why
This art piece makes you think twice about what it is. From far away it looks like a painting, but when you go closer you realise that it is actually different colours of thread. That was really interesting because had I not gone close to it I would’ve just thought it was a painting and I probably wouldn’t have been able to remember it.
Emil Lukas 'optic cleaning'
The ONE piece of art you would buy and why
The first one is made of 24,000 gems! That’s so amazing! It looks beautiful and expensive. I can’t remember the price but I know it was very, very expensive. This piece just never gets old. It will look shiny and expensive like it was born to look. The second one is so amazing as well. When I saw this I was so confused. I didn’t know what it was. It looked like a baby and a seal and pig ears ad real human hair! I’m not entirely sure what the ears are, but my first guess was a pig. When I looked closely I saw all the detail the artist put into it. There were veins under the skin and the shine on the nails. I was going so crazy. This piece is just breathtaking. The more you look at it the more you notice. There's always something you didn’t see. I couldn’t decide which one I’d rather buy because they are both so amazing.
Patricia Piccinini 'Inter-natural'
Metis Atash 'Marilyn VI'

A piece of art that used materials in an interesting way
This artist used concrete to recreate things that already exist. I don’t think I saw anything like this. I saw many sculpture/statues made from concrete but nothing that was an object that wasn’t alive.
Laura Moore 'Blackberry Bold'

A piece of art that connected to your own life
I don’t exactly think that the purpose of this artwork means this but it’s how I interpret it. To me, it expresses my life because sometimes life is rainbows and sunshine, other times it is just trash.
What you learned from an artist or curator (interview)
I learned how these art pieces are made. The glass is broken and then put back together to make an art piece.

John Kiley 'Amber Thermal Fractograph'

Your favourite collage

This piece is a photograph that is layered with maps and newspaper. I’m pretty sure all the newspaper articles and maps are somehow connected to the person in the photograph, in this case, Gord Downie. The newspaper articles could be about Gord Downie. The maps could be about where he was born or raised. This collage is different from every other collage I saw at the gallery. This collage wasn’t different heads and bodies on someone.

AndrĂ© Monet 'Gord Downie'

Dog Man: Lord of the Fleas - Book Review

We'll get to the root of Petey's problems. Why he's the villain, in every Dog Man book. Well, this time it's different. Petey's the good guy. We'll also meet his childhood friends, who want their revenge with a giant Robo-Brontosaurus. And Petey will fight back with the power of knock-knock jokes, in Flip-O-Rama. Will the power of good arise or will Petey stay his rotten old self?  This book is very funny. Something I always enjoy about Dog Man books is Lil Petey (he's my favourite character). He always does this thing where he says "why" after everything. Here's an example from the book.  Lil Petey is never mad or angry. He is always happy and innocent. He makes many jokes that are always HILARIOUS!   I also really love Flip-O-Rama scenes,  Dav Pilkey always has Flip-O-Rama's in his books. Flip-O-Rama is when you flip a page very quickly and it looks like it is animated. I think that anyone, any age would laugh and learn some...

Watch The Sky - Book Review

Before Jory's stepfather Caleb came along they used to live in the city, just Jory and his mom. His mom worked in a crummy coffee shop. She had met Caleb there when he defended her. They moved to an old farmhouse. They had found Jory's little sister in the fields eating pumpkins. Ansel, Jory's little brother, was born there.  Jory Birch has no ordinary life. He has a life full of secrets, danger, silent sister and signs.  Now he had to go to school too. Jory had always been home schooled by his mother.  Kit was a secret. So were the signs. School was school and home was home. Jory couldn't let them mix. Friends were school and family was home.  Signs were anywhere and everywhere, Caleb - Jory's stepfather says. Signs. They could be anywhere. They could be anything. They mean everything. Red leaves in the springtime. Pages torn from a library book. All the fishes in an aquarium facing the same way. A cracked egg with twin yolks. All signs.  Caleb tol...

A penny worth a fortune.

A very special penny that's worth a lot.  Rare 1943 copper penny Ordinarily, a penny would be worth, well a cent. But this particular penny was sold for $204, 000! What makes this penny so unique? It's the year. That year the coins were supposed to be made of steel so they could use the copper for other items such as shell casings. These items were critical to the Military in World War II.  There is an estimated 10 to 15 of these 1943 copper pennies still in circulation. How were they made? Well, some copper got into the mints and out came these pennies. In 1943 they weren't really too relevant, but now it's worth more than $200, 000! 1943 steel penny 1943 copper penny This $204, 000 penny was once lunch money in 1947 and belonged to a man named Don Lutes. Don held on to the penny because something told him it was special. He soon found out that there was something special about it. In 1958 a 1943 penny was sold for $40, 000, which today is $300, ...
